The Ice Age sculpture Salpauselkä once held back the waters of the large lake until Imatrankoski burst its channel into it. The handsome Kyläniemi of the second Salpausselkä with its sandy beaches still divides Saimaa in two. Lakes and ridges have been important routes for thousands of years. The figures painted on the rocks of Astuvansalmi tell about our ancestors' relationship with the surrounding nature, which is still represented by the endangered Kuolimo nieri. The map covers southern Saimaa from Lappeenranta to Kyläniemi and Kuolimo, Yövesi and Käkövesi. In addition to hiking information, it contains the historical and geological sites of the Geopark project. The lakes are described with depth readings, depth zones of the shores, channels and sea marks. Saimaa Geopark cherishes Saimaa's geological heritage, history and culture. The goal is to increase residents' appreciation of their home region and bring valuable heritage into everyday life.
