Bocholt - Duisburg - Kleve - Maas - Moers - Rhein - Venlo - Wesel - Xanten
The Lower Rhine is a cycling country, as it says in the book: Almost no gradients and mostly on asphalted farm roads far away from traffic routes, it goes through the Börde and the Lower Rhine plain between the Ruhr area and the Dutch border. It seems almost impossible to bring the Lower Rhine down to a single denominator. Should one highlight this westernmost part of Germany because of its natural monuments and parks or because of the numerous cultural-historical traces that different peoples and religions have left here? Throughout the area you will come across natural idylls again and again, be it along rivers, in small areas of forest and meadows or in the numerous designated nature reserves and in the Maas-Schwalm-Nette and Hohe Mark nature parks. Even in smaller protected areas you can experience an indescribable variety of endangered plants and animals, moors and natural forests as well as original floodplain landscapes, such as the Bislicher Insel. Over the centuries, the Lower Rhine has been under the changing influence of the Romans, Franks, Spaniards, Dutch, Prussians and French. People came to the Lower Rhine from everywhere, populated, fought and farmed this region and left their mark, which can be discovered in many places along the route. All shaped the country and its people in their own way. The oldest settlements on the Lower Rhine go back to Roman settlements, which ensured an early "civilization" of life on the left bank of the Rhine and introduced new technologies, e.g. B. the stone architecture. A large influx of religious refugees in the 16th century decisively stimulated the textile industry and contributed to religious and cultural "replication" in the Lower Rhine. In terms of architectural history, the Lower Rhine offers a correspondingly colorful picture. Industrial architecture, stately homes, religious buildings, workers' settlements and old fortifications in all conceivable architectural styles adorn the stations along the route. Suddenly, moths are no longer an example of animal biodiversity, but a special type of fortified tower, some of which have developed into larger castle complexes over the centuries. In addition to the impressive industrial architecture on the eastern Lower Rhine, mills of all kinds determine many city silhouettes. In addition to the historical buildings, there is also a wide range of cultural and historical exhibitions. You can find important collections of contemporary art, traditional sacred and rural handicrafts and many small museums with lovingly compiled and sometimes unusual exhibitions, e.g. the Beuys archive at Moyland Castle, the Kunsthalle in Kleve or a confectionery museum in Xanten – to name just a small part. On the other hand, the Roman excavations in Xanten and the Wunderland Kalkar are among the more well-known highlights directly on the Rhine. For a break from the bike, the Lower Rhine also offers a variety of variety - in many places you can paddle, go on horseback rides or just enjoy the cheerfulness of the Rhinelanders. The Lower Rhine route, with its main route and side routes, has a total length of over 2,000 kilometers and invites you on a journey through the varied cultural history of the Lower Rhine, from Roman times to the industrial culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the area of ??this map, the Rhine cycle path takes you past the Duisburg blast furnaces, numerous windmills and – if you wish – on to the Hoek van Holland lighthouse. On the German section, you mostly cycle near the river and always have the choice between the cycle path on the left and the right bank of the Rhine. Bridges and frequent ferry connections make it easier to switch to the other bank of the Rhine. 000 kilometers and invites you on a journey through the varied cultural history of the Lower Rhine from Roman times to the industrial culture of the 19th and 20th centuries.
