Description
Haren (Ems) – Haselünne – Hümmling – Löningen – Meppen – Papenburg – Ter Apel
Since the Emsland has the (bike) paths you need for relaxed rolling, you can enjoy the tranquility of its flat cultural and natural landscape from the bike. Unexpectedly, gems from early history, technology and architecture rise up again and again like "lighthouses". n the northern Emstal, nature meets historical and ultra-modern technology: the Rheder Emsauen, where countless waterfowl search for food in the constantly rising and falling water, are towered over by the overwhelmingly large dry docks of the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg, which can be seen from afar. The undocking of a new luxury ocean cruiser through the narrow, specially dammed Ems to the North Sea is always a spectacular event. The long shipbuilding tradition is also impressively presented in the open-air museums in Haren and Papenburg. South of the Papenburg Fehn canals and colonies are the forest and heath hills of the Hümmling. Mythical-looking megalithic tombs from the Iron, Bronze and Neolithic Age as well as numerous windmills and watermills are hidden in the "green expanse" of its beech forests. Tourist highlights are the world of paper in Dörpen, the Altenkamp estate in Aschendorf, the cinema collection in Löningen and the Clememswerth hunting lodge in Sögel, which impresses with its unique building layout. Friends of technology, culture and history will find one or the other gem in Emsland. Between Rheine in Westphalia on the southern edge and the elongated fen settlements of the city of Papenburg in the north, the Emsland Route describes a circuit through the district that gives it its name. In the western half, the mostly unbound meandering Ems with its meadows, Geest hills and river terraces contrasts with the Dortmund-Ems Canal, which runs straight through the wide river valley. On the 380 kilometers of the EmsRadweg – from the Ems springs to the far north to Emden – after the Münsterland, the wide plains of the Emsland pass by. Connection to the Hase-Ems-Tour and the Geest-Radweg is in the green city on the water Meppen, which lies at the confluence of the Ems and Hase.
