From Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Kelheim on the Danube
On its way from the Franconian Jura to the Danube, the Altmühl runs through fantastic landscapes. Spacious, gentle forest and meadow landscapes determine the character of the upper reaches. In the Altmühltal Nature Park, narrow valleys with bizarre Jura rock formations and the juniper heath characterize the landscape. The last section of the Altmühl was converted into the Main-Danube Canal, creating an artificial but still attractive natural landscape. Petrifications from prehistory and the traces of the Romans appear on every kilometer of cycling. But also medieval towns and castles as well as Baroque and Renaissance buildings bear witness to an eventful past in the Altmühltal.
