The DAV SnowCard is a tool for a quick and easy risk check for avalanche danger. It also helps to structure avalanche-related information when planning tours and in the field.
Originally developed in 2000 by Martin Engler and Jan Mersch, the DAV SnowCard is now an integral part of the DAV decision-making strategy "Avalanche Mantra" and has proven itself over the years as a decision-making aid on numerous ski and snowshoe tours as well as freeriding.
The aim of the DAV SnowCard is to provide users with realistic information about their personal risk; however, how much "uncertainty" he or she accepts is always left to the individual decision.
In all risk management methods, it is very important to be aware that there can never be absolute safety in winter high mountains. Avalanches can be triggered from a slope of 20 degrees and can penetrate very far into supposedly safe terrain!
